They say heaven is a place on earth, and in Trevor Powers’ universe that place is Boise, Idaho, where the cowboys are on chemicals, the neighbors are weird, and loneliness can make something sublime out of the mundane. The fourth Youth Lagoon record was never supposed to happen; Powers retired his beloved bedroom dream-pop project in 2016, spent the next few years releasing noisier work under his government name, then lost his voice in 2021 from a freak reaction to an over-the-counter medication. Emerging on the other side, Heaven Is a Junkyard plays out like a noir film with its scenes scrambled: Blood stains appear on blouses, brothers quietly leave for war, a devil waits at a bus stop, and Powers’ uncannily sweet falsetto guides us through with its dream logic.
