Canyons

The quartet Gone West proves that the sensibilities of Los Angeles and Nashville aren’t far apart at all when it comes to sunny singer-songwriter pop. Its members—Colbie Caillat, Jason Reeves, Nelly Joy, and Justin Kawika Young—have roots in both scenes, and they came together as a simpatico combo after serving as supporting players in Caillat’s solo folk-pop projects. Canyons, the group’s full-length debut, showcases sleek writing and a frictionless vocal dynamic. Sometimes all four combine their breathy timbres in impossibly smooth harmony (see: the ballad “Gamblin’ Town”). The pastel-hued parting melodrama “I’m Never Getting Over You” is treated almost like a duet, while the cheeky kiss-off “Confetti” features a single voice out front. The group sounds equally comfortable gliding over buoyant beats and hand-played acoustic-leaning instruments (“R&R”), airy reggae-style grooves (“Knew You”), and country-pop balladry (“Home Is Where the Heartbreak Is”) alike.
