Gustav Mahler was an artist who made music with all his heart and soul, and in his fellow-composer Leonard Bernstein he found an interpreter who was both a fearless champion and a true kindred spirit. Bernstein wasn’t the only conductor to rediscover Mahler’s music in the decades after the Second World War, but few conductors before or since have matched his fervor, or his sheer, wide-eyed sense of wonder at Mahler’s musical universe.
