This 2011 recording by the Greek-born, Russian-based conductor Teodor Currentzis is an imposing reading of the traditional Süssmayr completion. It employs some stately tempos and grand gestures, but does them with enormous conviction and is, for the most part, highly convincing. A masterstroke occurs at the close of “Lacrimosa,” where Mozart left off: Instead of offering a putative ending, Currentzis covers the close with a peal of bells. It won’t leave you unmoved.
