In 2006, French hip-hop producer Onra went to Vietnam so that he could explore his father’s ancestry. He returned with a stack of old vinyl he found in flea markets. The first entry in his Chinoiseries series chops up those records into 32 dusty, lovingly constructed boom-bap beats: The dramatic orchestral stabs of “The Anthem” ring with an Asian influence, while the tight, grotty loops on tracks like “Last Tango in Saigon” are reminiscent of the work of beatmakers like Madlib and J Dilla.
