Outer Space

Outer Space

Since leaving Accra for Rotterdam, Peter Somuah has been on an endless journey of rediscovery, sharpening his compositional skills as well as developing a warm and melancholic style of playing in cahoots with some of the most gifted jazz players in Africa and Europe. The fruit of Somuah’s hard work arrives in the form of a madcap 10-track debut album titled Outer Space, where the musician’s keen sense for funky rhythmicity and electro-influenced adventurism are acutely on display. Primarily inspired by the totemic work of legends like Miles Davis and Roy Hargrove, Somuah’s Outer Space’s channels the rock-tinged flavor of their music and imbues it with the traditional West African music of his childhood, creating a record that is at once buoyant and unsinkable. Somuah achieves this while blurring the line between jazz, electronica, Afro-funk, hip-hop, and traditional Ghanaian music with a deft touch honed from years of practice. “Magical” is enlivened by its steely percussions and free-wheeling guitar riffs, while the playful swirls at the end of “Appointment” show Somuah operating at a sublime level of technical proficiency.
