Wilde - EP

Wilde - EP

“I ain’t coming down,” JJ Wilde sings on the lead-off track from this six-song EP—and the sentiment is understandable given that the song in question (“Bushweed”) is about getting out of your head in a field of marijuana plants. But the line also speaks to the lofty cruising altitude the Kitchener, Ontario, singer has maintained since the release of her Juno-nominated 2020 full-length Ruthless. And with Wilde, she proves there’s a lot more to her than bottle-smashing, old-school rock ’n’ roll. She infuses the ’60s psych-soul bounce of “Bushweed” and gritty acoustic blues of “Off the Rails” with rap-schooled flows, while “Mercy” positions the tense tale of a woman confronting her stalker inside a grungy gospel anthem. But Wilde has hardly forsaken her hellraising roots: The EP is highlighted by an arse-kickin’, cowbell-clanging cover of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” with The Glorious Sons’ Brett Emmons playing the Tom Petty to her Stevie Nicks.
