Jay Whiss opens roughly half the songs on his solo debut Peace of Mind the same way: “Prime forever,” he says, before beginning to rap. It’s a declaration of his allegiance to the Toronto rap crew he hails from, the one older fans will say launched him and the one that clearly empowers him across the album. Within Peace of Mind, Whiss is clearly still of a Prime mentality, rapping extensively about the impact he and the collective have had on their native Toronto over production from long-standing hitmakers like Murda Beatz, Richie Souf, and Cubeatz. Prime members Jimmy Prime and Donnie pop up on “Left Me for Dead” and “Lay Low,” respectively, to talk resilience and lifestyle, while Prime members past are here in spirit; Whiss uses album closer “Mind in a Maze” to honor the dearly departed Smoke Dawg and Koba Prime.
