Rising Canadian hitmaker Jade Eagleson not only hails from the sort of classic country background that few other twentysomething performers do these days—raised on his grandparents' farm in rural Ontario—but his sound and sensibilities connect back to a sturdy lineage, generations deep. On his self-titled album, which features his first Canadian chart-topper "Lucky," he comes across as a guy clever and knowing about his lack of pretension. Part of it is Eagleson's hard country vocal attack, leathery yet nimble and easygoing. During "Hackin' Darts," a frisky, rockabilly-style hard-luck tale, he even takes playful plunges into his bass range, proving himself to be an old-school showman.
