Brampton, Ontario, rapper Northsidebenji’s second EP of 2019 is a more succinct, in-your-face statement than its slow-burning predecessor, Caviar Dreams. And it further confirms his status as one of the most captivating MCs to come out of the Toronto area in the post-Drake era. With a flow as melodic as it is fierce, Northsidebenji spends the EP’s five tracks grappling with the side effects of rising fame, particularly the opportunistic hangers-on who want to leech off his success. But the cold, ominous atmospheres of his past work have been replaced with surprisingly colorful textures, like the flamenco-style guitar flowing through “Clicquot,” the wind-chimed synths of “Lesson Learned,” and the flute flourishes that soften the blunt bass hits of “Sleezy.”
