MILLÉNIUM

MILLÉNIUM

After cutting his teeth as one fifth of Quebec hip-hop crew L'Amalgame and releasing a handful of EPs over the last few years, Vendou is ready for the spotlight. Not an MC of the attention-hogging variety, this soft-spoken singer-rapper lets his couplets float through space and linger awhile. Featherweight synths and laidback trap beats underpin the 14 daydreamy tracks that make up MILLÉNIUM, and they wouldn't sound out of place next to Mac Miller's catalog. Nostalgic opener “Temps en temps” finds Vendou whispering rhymes about wanting to stop time, or even turn it back on tough days, over soft-strummed guitar. Dark thoughts come to the fore on the trippy “Météore,” which references iconic French poet Baudelaire, while he ruminates on death, love, and “cette vie de merde” (read: “this crappy life”). Pals Rymz, Peet, and FouKi each drop in, the latter on the head-nodding “Drôle de rêve,” where the pair trade verses about the thin line between big dreams and making it happen—an appropriate topic to tackle on a promising debut LP.
