Trigga Reloaded

Trigga Reloaded

With its string of hits and chart-topping status in the U.S. and U.K., Trigga marked a new peak in Trey Songz's career when it was released in 2014. And all the success only seemed to increase the singer's generosity when it came to his output. After keeping busy touring with Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj and whetting appetites with his two-part EP Intermission, Songz returned in the summer of 2015 with Trigga Reloaded, a revamped edition of his sixth studio album that combined the original's 13 songs with four new tracks and another that was previously featured on the deluxe version. Songz had Charlie Puth to thank for two of the fresh additions. Based on a demo provided by the songwriter and producer, "Slow Motion" combines a sprightly guitar figure and a feel-good vibe with a midtempo groove and plenty of Songz's signature finesse. The singer gets another chance to benefit from Puth's pop savvy on "Serve It Up," a steamy slow jam rife with culinary-themed come-ons. "Oh, you're so delicious, I'll never leave the kitchen" is just one tasty example. Another new track by a high-powered team of collaborators, including singer-songwriter Ester Dean, "About You" strikes an equally savvy balance between pop immediacy and R&B sophistication by building on a repurposed hook from Carly Simon's 1972 hit "You're So Vain." "Loving You" proves to be just as crafty when a little bit of "Seasons of Love" from Rent somehow makes its way into a steamy song that also includes a cameo by Ty Dolla $ign. While these new additions principally serve to increase the original album's energy levels, the final one adds some poignancy. First included on the deluxe version of Trigga, "What's Best For You" brings Trigga Reloaded to a dramatic close with Songz lamenting the possible end of a relationship. "It's not about what I want, but it's all about what you need," he sings, revealing the vulnerability and sensitivity that are the flipside to his more brazen tendencies.
