What happened when two friends pleaded with Tems to take them into the studio with her one night? The answer is the Nigerian superstar’s new single “Love Me JeJe”, a reworking of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic. “I went out for dinner with my girls, two of my friends,” she tells Apple Music. “My friends are always telling me, ‘You never show us your Tems side. You never take us to the studio. Are you a doppelganger?’ So I said, ‘OK, tonight we are going to the studio and you people are going to sing.’” Her producers had sent her a beat “as a challenge”, which Tems decided to have a go with that night. “I told my friends, ‘Let’s all freestyle, take turns.’ So one of my friends did, ‘Love me jeje, love me tender’. My other friend was just screaming. I was like, ‘Actually, this is a mad vibe. I’m going to keep this in the song.’ I did my own freestyle. And it was just such a cute vibe.” “Love Me Jeje” is a song the singer-songwriter/producer has always held close. “I wanted to pay tribute to the actual song,” says Tems, who admits now all of her friends are queuing up to collaborate with her in the studio. “My mum loves that song. It’s a Nigerian classic. It just felt right. The concept of the song just means ‘Love me softly, take your time with me, love me unconditionally.’ It’s like, ‘Give me some sugar.’” Listen to “Love Me JeJe” now, plus essential new drops from Darkoo and Dess Dior, plus K-Trap and Blade Brown.
