Multi-instrumentalist Sylvester Onyejiaka, as Sly5thAve, premiered these large-ensemble arrangements at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, and reportedly a gratified Dr. Dre was in attendance. The resulting double album prioritises melody and groove, with deep-toned trombones, resonant flutes and woodwinds, strings and lush keyboards supporting an array of featured soloists with widely varying styles. In Dre’s music, vocals are everywhere, but these largely instrumental renderings provide another gateway into his legacy, using thematic material for interludes, jam breaks and other refreshing twists.
