For a fairly concise portrait of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson looked over his group's catalog and picked 19 of his favorite songs and one previously unreleased track ("California Feelin'," recorded by Wilson and his live band back in the '70s). Wilson admits leaving out a number of favorites, due to the record label's constraints. Wilson prefers ballads to rockers, highlighting "The Warmth of the Sun," "In My Room," "Wonderful," and "'Til I Die" over many of the early rockers. "I Get Around," "Don't Worry Baby," "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations" are the most upbeat tunes. "God Only Knows" and "Caroline, No," from Pet Sounds, are featured in stereo mixes. (Odd, considering Wilson was deaf in one ear and experienced the world in mono.) Some interesting curiosities, such as "Busy Doin' Nothin'," "We're Together Again," and "This Whole World" are slotted into place. It's always interesting to know what the man behind the music is thinking.
