David Bowie (2015 Remaster)

The hippie folk-rock sound of David Bowie's second album (like his 1967 debut, it was just called David Bowie on its original UK release) may come as a surprise at first. But underneath the pealing 12-string acoustic guitars and often lavish arrangements, the title track's chilling alienation and the doomy epic "Cygnet Committee" forecast Bowie's sometimes apocalyptic '70s lyrics. Elsewhere, the touching breakup ballad "Letter to Hermione" and the dreamily communal "Memory of a Free Festival" showcase a gentler side.
