About Daddy Cool
A striking presence during the 1970s, faux-innocent Melbourne ensemble Daddy Cool updated frontman Ross Wilson’s deep love of ’50s doo-wop with pub-ready boogies and lusty innuendo. The former is a hallmark of the band’s 1971 debut, “Eagle Rock,” a handclapping sing-along that’s permanently engraved in the Australian consciousness. As for the latter, 1971’s Sex, Dope, Rock’n’Roll: Teenage Heaven is practically a concept album about youthful libidos, thanks to songs like “Sixty Minute Man” and “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box.” Despite only releasing three albums (including 2006's The New Cool), Daddy Cool remains a cherished—and reliably cheeky—time capsule of generational crossover. Amidst the band’s periodic breakups and reunions, Wilson went on to produce the glam-flavored Skyhooks and form longstanding group Mondo Rock. Drummer Gary Young did a stint in the equally influential Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, while guitarist Ross Hannaford dabbled in colorful projects until his death in 2016.
