Weatherhole

Weatherhole

There is no such thing as a bad Michael Hurley album. That can of course be daunting, since the guy has about 17 of them. Some of his recordings have clearer sound than others, while others emphasize the playful over the lyrical. Hurley, whose nicknames for himself include Doc Snock, Hi Fi Snock, the Horrible Horrible Pearly Snock Man, and sometimes just Snock, is in fully un-serious mode on this 1999 release. Weatherhole has a delightfully playful and half-baked vibe throughout, though the vocals are mixed far too low. Perhaps the reason for both of these things can be found in the anthemic "Nat'l Weed Grower's Association"? Regardless, any album that sticks the line "call me anything/ just don't call me late for dinner" inside a pleasant, folk-rock Gene Autry sound — as Hurley does on "Don't Call Me Sam" — begs to be heard.
