John Butler Trio’s seventh album is a complicated beast. After years of constant touring, Butler and his wife moved to serene Western Australia, where he grew up. It was here he began working on songs that eventually became HOME, using his laptop, not a studio, to record demos for the first time ever. It allowed him the freedom to blend new sounds into his mélange of blues and folk-pop: Synths electrify the booming percussion of “Home”, while they embellish tracks like the stunning closer, “We Want More”, and “Just Call”, a sweet love song—which took Butler 13 years to finish—about meeting his wife. Butler also used his time away from touring to face the anxiety he'd ignored for years. He addresses it directly on “Running Away”, one of HOME's most powerful songs: “I’m choking up on the fear and the doubt”, he admits.
