South of Everywhere

A leading voice in modern Australian country, Henry Wagons mingles romance and mortality on his third solo album. “I Don’t Know When It Is I’m Gonna Die” muses darkly on the titular uncertainty, while “Cover My Eyes” tackles the lasting toll of grave missteps in matters of love and “I Cooked You a Meal” sets the scene for some much-needed domestic affection. As always, Wagons spikes his brooding baritone with a perpetual glint of mischief, and this time he tries out a few compact character studies. Observe “Felix Granger the Finger Pickin’ Boy,” featuring especially twangy lead guitar from The Living End’s Chris Cheney. Taking an extended break from his long-standing Melbourne ensemble Wagons, the self-styled outlaw balladeer reminds us that he can do a bit of everything here. That includes taking on the daunting Bob Dylan songbook with a scenery-chewing cover of 1989’s “Everything Is Broken.”
