Letters To Chi-Chi

Letters To Chi-Chi

If you’re familiar with the hit Japanese manga and anime franchise Dragon Ball, you’ll already know that Vegeta is the home planet of protagonist Goku. It’s safe to assume Western Sydney hip-hop trio Planet Vegeta are fans—the Chi-Chi referenced in the title of this, their debut EP, is Goku’s wife and the princess of Fire Mountain. That’s not to say that Letters to Chi-Chi is a collection of tracks about fictional stories, even if one of the tracks is called “Sailor Moon”—the title of another manga series. Instead, group members LKGD, SVNO, and Jazz NOBODI draw on their shared admiration for R&B and rap to create a sound that’s modern while still retaining an old-school feel. All three bandmates grew up in Samoan households and point to their Polynesian heritage as a key factor in instilling their love of music from an early age. They’ve got a keen eye for a sample, too—their interpolation of Ray Charles’ classic “Georgia on My Mind” brings a fresh point of view and transforms it into the 2-step-influenced club jam “Jorja.” Those magpie tendencies have previously extended to Fried Chicken & Flips, a series where Planet Vegeta breathes new life into tracks like “thank u, next” and Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain”—exercises which have honed the invention and broad-mindedness that permeate Letters to Chi-Chi.
