A Dangerous Method Vol. 1

A Dangerous Method Vol. 1

Triple One is well-known for a brash sense of immediacy, but the West Sydney hip-hop crew showcases mellower and more sensitive aspects on the first in a linked pair of mixtapes. Seizing on the rollercoaster contrast between harsh and mellow, A Dangerous Method Vol. 1 deftly balances the individual presences of rappers Marty Bugatti and Obi Ill Terrors, singer Lil Dijon, and beatmaker Billy Gunns with guest production from 18YOMAN, LEN20, Styalz Fuego, and Grasps. “NEON DREAMBOAT” dispenses visceral lyrics about suddenly falling in love over an intricate mingling of glossy pop, sultry R&B, and swaggering trap. Meanwhile, the rapid-fire “BLOOD RAVE” evokes a dense labyrinth of city streets, only for “GHOST” to slip into plaintive soul-searching. Most surprising is “COME OVER,” a romantic lament co-written with DMA’S guitarist Matt Mason, whose delicate indie-rock licks shimmer against the percolating beats.
