GODZILLA

GODZILLA

GODZILLA, the fourth album by Australian twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, better known as The Veronicas, opens with the title track—a fierce statement of intent, and the pair’s heaviest song to date. With a chorus that’s more metal than polished pop and strong late-2000s Paramore vibes, “GODZILLA” is as attention-grabbing as its namesake. Sure, GODZILLA is rooted in pop, but there’s a playful approach to it that plays out as the pair toy with other sounds and styles along the way. “In My Blood” is an EDM anthem evoking the heady euphoria of the early stages of love, while “The Only High” is an emotive, piano-led ballad. It’s an album of love songs, but it’s not all peachy—for every soaring moment about the highs of romance, there’s a dark admission about the lows of heartbreak. There’s a yearning for simpler times, too, as displayed on the retro, chiming synths of “High Score,” a track which likens the escapism of lost nights in the arcade to the carefree experiences of a relationship’s honeymoon period.
