Find Me A Cloud

Combining a firm DIY philosophy with sincere, straightforward songwriting, The Grogans have built up a grassroots following without a big record label behind them. Their fourth studio album continues that rare feeling that they’re pleasantly following their passing whims without worrying about outside pressures. While their signature scruffy garage pop is on full display here, the Melbourne trio locates a brash burst of energy on lead single “I Cannot Read Your Mind”—complete with a big guitar hook that flashes back to the 2000s to fellow Aussie breakouts The Vines—and they slide comfortably into group vocals and a loose country twang on “Stay High.” Singer/guitarist Quin Grunden keeps such loving throwbacks fresh and tuneful, bringing a casual accessibility to the shaggy stoner-rock riffage of “Lay Back” and the Hendrix-esque psych licks of “I Need You.” As evidenced by their cover of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” a month before releasing this record, The Grogans know exactly how to update and adapt the untroubled cool of previous decades. Key to their continued appeal is keeping their songs all too relatable: when Grunden sings about feeling uncertain of his direction in life on “I’m Not Sure,” he elevates a familiar feeling into a bright, ringing chorus.
