Following his ARIA-nominated 2017 debut as The Kite String Tangle, Brisbane producer Danny Harley devises panoramic electro-pop more glitchy, dark and emotional than ever. The album contains a sense of mystery, inspired by a cryptic reference tome Harley found in real life, Codex Seraphinianus, an encyclopaedic description of a fictional world, written in a made-up language. He also lets some other, less cryptic influences come through, offsetting songs’ more overt pop directives with flickering undercurrents more akin to artists like Burial and Mount Kimbie. Yet even when surrounded by glitching samples, pulsing beats and deep shudders of bass, Harley retains a poignant vulnerability. “You’ll always be the one that got away,” he pines on the pitch-shifted refrain of “P()L4R”, while Melbourne vocalist Eliott joins him for the romantic duet “KILLING TIME”. Seamless guest spots from Lanks and Kateboy complete what Harley calls a fruitful “writing camp” with his collaborators, and his own soulful singing pushes to thrilling new heights on tracks like “NORTH”.
