Kiwi quintet LEISURE make music designed for lazy, hazy days. Their first two albums—2016’s self-titled debut and 2019’s Twister—established their sound, which takes elements from Japanese city pop, classic soul and 1980s synth-pop to create something that feels at once familiar and inventive. Here, they step it up once again. This band—which includes Jaden Parkes and Jordan Arts of punk collective Goodnight Nurse and pop group Kids of 88, respectively, and BENEE producer Josh Fountain—has a manifesto to “keep things LEISURE”. You can hear those chill feelings on songs such as “Slipping Away”, which evokes a vibe that lives somewhere between Ocean Alley’s spacious indie-rock, Miami Horror's retro-electro and the sincere funk of Mayer Hawthorne, all underpinned with dreamy falsetto vocals. Marrying the trippiness of Tame Impala with mellow nu-disco, Side A’s five tracks are ideal for a sunny Sunday afternoon.
