About Red Box

This UK band was formed in 1982 with a line-up comprising Simon Toulson-Clark (vocals/guitar), Julian Close (saxophone), Martin Nickson (drums), Rob Legge (bass), Paddy Talbot (keyboards). The group enjoyed minor success with the independently issued ‘Chenko’ and subsequently signed to WEA Records. This coincided with a reduction in the line-up, from which Clark and Close emerged as a duo. In the summer of 1985, they enjoyed a UK Top 3 hit with the catchy ‘Lean On Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)’. Its Top 10 success was repeated the following year with ‘For America’. Their first album The Circle And The Square reached number 73, but a long gap in recording saw Red Box lose ground. Four years passed before the follow-up Motive, was issued and none of its attendant singles reached, the charts.
