Employing a melodic flow and a diverse stylistic and thematic palette, MB is a shapeshifting artist who’s carved out a space in Quebec’s hip-hop scene. Born in Algeria in 1994, MB began experimenting with rap during schoolyard freestyle sessions. He would continue writing verses, but it was only when Montreal rapper Lost convinced him to share his music with the world that he began taking it seriously. Released in 2017, his debut project, Couvre feu, saw him reflect on the less-than-pleasant aspects of life while flaunting percussive flows and spurts of melody (“Vamos”). On later projects, including 2021’s Couvre-feu, Vol. II, he infuses Latin and rai sounds to enrich his sound. Infectious tracks that lean even more heavily into melody, such as “Pour la vie” off 2018’s Sourire kabyle, further evolve the style he showcased at the outset of his career.
