About Jonathan Hultén

A Swedish singer/songwriter and artist whose sparse, dark folk songs evoke the spectral naturalism of Nick Drake and inward-looking acoustic musings of early Sufjan Stevens, Jonathan Hultén is also the lead guitarist for versatile occult-themed death metal group Tribulation. He released his debut album, the evocative Chants from Another Place, in 2020. Hultén co-founded Tribulation in the mid-2000s alongside vocalist/bassist Johannes Andersson, guitarist Adam Zaars, and drummer Jakob Johansson. Citing influences like Autopsy and Morbid Angel, the band's 2009 full-length debut, The Horror, and 2013 sophomore effort, The Formulas of Death, operated in the realm of classic Swedish death metal, pairing icy atmospherics with blazing, primal riffage. With the release of 2015's The Children of Night, Tribulation began to add elements of black metal, goth, and psych-tinged occult rock to their sound, which carried over to subsequent efforts like Down Below (2018) and the concert LP Alive & Dead at Södra Teatern. During this time Jonathan Hultén began releasing material under his own name that hewed closer to '60s U.K. folk than it did the punitive extreme metal of Tribulation. In 2017 he released an EP, The Dark Night of the Soul, followed in 2020 by the eerie and contemplative full-length Chants from Another Place. ~ James Christopher Monger
