Jimmy Kennedy

About Jimmy Kennedy

One of Britain’s leading songwriters from the mid-1930s through to the '50s, Jimmy Kennedy is best remembered for lyrical contributions to songs such as "The Teddy Bear’s Picnic" and "Isle Of Capri;" Gracie Fields’ version of the latter is particularly fondly remembered. He also wrote new lyrics to a traditional tune, resulting in "The Hokey Pokey," one of the most popular party dances of all time. In association with Michael Carr, Kennedy wrote one of the biggest morale-boosting hits of World War II, "We’re Gonna Hang Out The Washing On The Siegfried Line." Like so many others, Kennedy’s style was swamped by the rock ‘n’ roll revolution, but his contribution was recognised, with two Ivor Novello Awards, and an OBE.
