About RAY BLK
South East London singer/songwriter RAY BLK explores both the heart-wrenching depths and invigorating heights of life. Born Rita Ekwere in Nigeria in 1994, the artist moved to the English district of Catford as a toddler and quickly recognized her passion for music. By age 13, RAY BLK had created a group called New Found Content with her schoolmate and future producer/songwriter MNEK. While the fruits of that collaboration never reached the world, RAY BLK eventually shared her own music while pursuing a degree in English literature. In 2015, she released her debut EP, the narrative-driven Havisham, which was inspired by a spurned female character in Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations. The following year, RAY BLK further developed her storytelling abilities with Durt, highlighted by the deeply reflective “My Hood,” featuring grime titan Stormzy. While her conceptually advanced takes have made a name for RAY BLK, the singer also masters moments of transparent introspection, as evidenced by 2021’s “Mine.”
