About Siaira Shawn

A gently expressive vocalist and an upfront lyricist who has been active since the late 2000s, alternative R&B artist Siaira Shawn made a breakthrough when "Wrong Speed" (2018) was licensed for the soundtrack of the comedy-drama series Insecure. Born and raised in San Francisco -- and based at points out of New York, Oakland, and Los Angeles -- Siaira Harris got into the performing arts during her childhood and gradually widened her scope with other forms of expression, including literature, poetry, and music. This led to juggling an independent music career and work with youth organizations and arts education. During the latter half of the 2000s, Shawn made featured appearances on a slew of underground releases, and during the next decade built her solo discography with EPs such as Ghost (2013) and the two-part Flowers While You're Here (2015), all the while assisting with recordings by the likes of Columbia Nights and Audra the Rapper. In 2018, the singer won an Afropunk-sponsored contest for music placement in a third-season episode of Issa Rae's Insecure. The ballad "Wrong Speed" was used in the seventh episode, and consequently appeared on that season's soundtrack between a duet by Victoria Monét and Lucky Daye and a contribution from Lion Babe. Within only a few weeks, Shawn returned with "Islands." A handful of additional singles and the Tender EP appeared throughout 2019. ~ Andy Kellman
