About Adam Levine

After leading the soulful pop-rock band Maroon 5 to superstardom in the 2000s, singer and songwriter Adam Levine cemented his celebrity status the following decade by serving as a coach on NBC’s The Voice. • Levine grew up in Los Angeles. He attended the Brentwood School with Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden, who would become his bandmates in Kara’s Flowers and later Maroon 5. • Formed in 1994, Kara’s Flowers signed to Reprise Records and released the album The Fourth World in 1997. After the group was dropped from the label, Levine and Carmichael relocated to Long Island, New York, to attend Five Towns College. • Levine worked as a writing assistant for the CBS series Judging Amy during the early 2000s. • In 2001, the members of Kara’s Flowers reformed as Maroon 5. The rechristened group incorporated elements of hip-hop and R&B—sounds Levine and Carmichael heard while living in New York. • Maroon 5’s 2002 blockbuster debut, Songs About Jane, was inspired by a messy breakup Levine went through. • Amid Maroon 5’s success, Adam became a sought-after guest. Most notably, he appeared on Gym Class Heroes’ quintuple-platinum 2011 single “Stereo Hearts.” • Maroon 5’s first six albums—spanning Songs About Jane to 2017’s Red Pill Blues—all went platinum or better in the US. During that stretch, the group notched 15 Top 10 hits, including four that reached No. 1. • As of 2021, Levine had won three Grammys with Maroon 5. The group picked up Best New Artist in 2005 and took home Best Pop Performance For a Group for “This Love” in 2006 and “Makes Me Wonder” in 2008. • Levine was a coach on The Voice from 2011 to 2019.
