About Freyr

Freyr is a Swedish-Icelandic singer/songwriter who emerged in 2018 with an accessible Scandinavian indie-folk style that favors both melody and melancholy. Born in Sweden, Freyr spent his formative years immersing himself in jazz, classical, folk, heavy metal, pop, and indie rock, splitting his time between his Swedish homeland with his Olympian father and medical researcher mother, and the wilds of Iceland with his grandfather. His musical pursuits began with the flute and later moved to classical and electric guitar. He played in a number of bands while attending high school and eventually joined Lärkträdet (The Larch), a diverse music collective in his hometown of Umeå. In 2017 Freyr moved to Stockholm to pursue a philosophy degree. During his time there he began writing songs that drew inspiration from artists like Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez, and Sigur Rós. One of those tracks caught the attention of producer Neil Johnson (Joshua Hyslop, Austin Basham), who helped the young artist cut his first single, "Over My Head." Released in 2018, the song garnered over 200,000 streams and resulted in Freyr inking a deal with Nettwerk. He then headed back into the studio with Johnson and put together a debut EP. The resulting I'm Sorry was released in 2020. ~ James Christopher Monger
