About Collateral

The Ramsgate, Kent act formed in 2016 and had a distinctly '80s-inspired stadium rock sound recalling Bon Jovi, which led to their alignment with the New Wave of Classic Rock movement. Their roots can be traced back to 2014 and the Angelo Tristan Band, in which frontman Tristan -- along with bassist Jack Bentley-Smith -- searched in vain for a couple of years to find the right players to complete their quartet. By 2016, guitarist Todd Winger and drummer Ben Atkinson were on board and they changed their name to Collateral. The band took to touring the U.K. in a red ex-Royal Mail van, clocking up over 100 gigs per year until a deal was struck with Roulette Records. Their pop-focused May 2018 debut single, "Midnight Queen," hinted at Tristan's passion for the work of Bryan Adams, and by November of the same year it formed part of the 4 Shots EP. That release also included the yearning power ballad "Just Waiting for You," a song that Tristan wrote much earlier in life at the age of 14. Following the May 2019 release of "Lullaby," they began to ramp up their live dates. That summer they appeared at Hard Rock Hell's Ibiza Road Trip, made a headline appearance at the Camden Rocks Festival, supported their idol Danny Vaughn, and appeared on Jon Bon Jovi's Runway to Paradise cruise. After this exposure, they were nominated as a Best Newcomer by Hard Rock Hell and a Breakthrough Act by Get Ready to Rock. Collateral's self-titled debut album appeared in February 2020, but was preceded by the hard-rocking album-opener "Mr. Big Shot" when it was released as a single in October 2019. The LP was mixed by Romesh Dodangoda, a studio luminary who had previously worked with acts such as Bring Me the Horizon and Funeral for a Friend, and the band spent March on tour with Phil X & the Drills in support of Collateral. ~ James Wilkinson
