The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2 (Deluxe Edition)

Powerhouse neo-soul vocalist returns to her roots with her seventh album and our Editors' Choice, The Soul Sessions, Vol 2. As with the original Soul Sessions album—her impressive debut from 2003—she interprets established songs with her own expressive instrument. Some selections are newer, such as the guitar-heavy rock/soul version of Broken Bell’s “The High Road” from 2009. Others, like an assured take on Sylvia’s 1973 slow jam classic “Pillow Talk,” have a considerably longer history. Back when she was 16, she worked with the likes of Betty Wright, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and the unrelated Angie Stone. This time, she’s joined by the likes of Ernie Isley, Delbert McClinton, and Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section pianist/keyboardist Clayton Ivey. While she’s always been a proverbial old soul, Stone now has a life-earned wisdom to further fortify her diverse selection of covers.
