Timeless

Timeless

Dallas Smith made a smooth transition from frontman of the Canadian hard rock band Default to chart-topping country artist in the early 2010s, working with a producer who’d also straddled both those worlds, Joey Moi. They’ve continued their studio partnership on Smith’s fourth solo album, Timeless, with two additional co-producers (Dave Cohen and David Garcia), and they're still building sleek hooks around Smith’s bright, taut vocal attack. He sounds insistent delivering the nostalgia-invoking, reverentially romantic lyrics of "Make 'Em Like You" and the title cut, even leaping an octave to hit a forceful line two minutes into the latter track. During the towering refrain of “Like a Man,” Smith makes a virile vow of affection: “Gonna chase you like a boy and love you like a man.” He has an equally cutting singing partner in the droll, down-home rising hitmaker HARDY during the rollicking romp “Some Things Never Change” and sounds friskily energetic opposite his fellow Canadian stars Dean Brody and MacKenzie Porter during “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone.”
