In a Tidal Wave of Mystery

The Los Angeles band Capital Cities was born on Craigslist; Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant connected there when the two songwriters were working as commercial jingle writers. After releasing a viral single and expanding into a touring sextet, Capital Cities released their debut album, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, in 2013. From the opening indie dance-pop gem “Safe and Sound” to the closing sultry serenade “Love Away,” Capital Cities have crafted a filler-free album that intersects infectious disco-dappled grooves of the '70s with glossy neon keyboard textures from the '80s. But as standouts like the electro-laced “Kangaroo Court” or the highly groovy (and cleverly titled) “I Sold My Bed, but Not My Stereo” reveal, the band’s real talents reside in writing naturally catchy songs. Where many likeminded musical peers create music that sounds too aware of itself, Capital Cities excel at making funky, synthy dance-pop that seems as honest and organic as acoustic folk field recordings. André 3000 of OutKast fame makes a cameo in the soulful jam “Farrah Fawcett Hair.”
