Isaac Hayes is a natural fit for the “For Lovers” series that also includes Ray Charles, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Chet Baker and Sarah Vaughan. Hayes, after all, sang mostly about matters of the heart. And at great length. Hayes created his own approach to romantic song where he would warm up his audience with an extended “rap,” pleading his case with words before he went in for the kill with that deep voice that made everything he sang sound like it was of grave importance. This collection mostly stays away from those extended workouts and focuses on the songs themselves — though the nine minute cover of the Carpenters hit, the Burt Bacharach-Hal David composed “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” uses the extra breathing room to create an epic. A cover of Bread’s “Baby I’m a Want You,” performed with old songwriting partner David Porter, is delightfully smooth, while originals such as “Joy (Part 1),” “Make a Little Love to Me” and “Let’s Don’t Ever Blow Our Thing” further show why Hayes is such an authority on soul music and romantic love.
