Bored

Bored

Not only does 1999’s Bored compile all three seven-inch singles that Destroy All Monsters recorded for Cherry Red between 1978 and 1979, but it also shows the band veering from their experimental cacophony to unleash some Motor City rock ‘n’ roll. Of course the fact that they had guitarist Ron Asheton from the Stooges on guitar and MC5’s Mike Davis on bass helped to kick out the jams. Well-worthy of A-side status, “You’re Gonna Die” was originally the B-side to “Bored” even though it became an influential punk staple that’s been covered by countless bands — dig the skronky Funhouse-era saxophone solo here. “November 22nd 1963” muses on the Kennedy assassination with Niagara doing a semi-spoken word bit sounding a little like Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died” (even though it preceded his recording by over a year). “Nobody Knows” gives insight to the femme fatale punk Niagara would later explore with Dark Carnival.
