With its stunningly gorgeous debut album, In the Wooded Forest, the Brooklyn duo Savoir Adore garnered comparisons to Broken Social Scene, MGMT, and The Postal Service. Its 2013 sophomore album is more fleshed out, with a quiver of synthesizers and noticeably more expensive-sounding production for Savoir Adore's minimalist pop sophistication. The opening duet, “Dreamers,” finds Paul Hammer and Deidre Muro still deeply in love with all things '80s; “Dreamers” and the bookending standout “Sea of Gold” recall the bygone cosmopolitan pop of The Thompson Twins. There’s an innovative approach to arranging and mixing these songs that keeps Savior Adore from falling into total retro trappings. “Loveliest Creature” pulses with a nouveau disco beat as Muro sings seductively over New Order–inspired keyboards. Similarly, “Empire of Light” blends bygone dreampop textures with a glossy new wave sheen that owes equal parts to Berlin’s 1984 album Pleasure Victim and Pala by Friendly Fires.
