Ice Station

Ice Station

Craig Klein works as an Exhibit Preparator for the Special Collections Division of the Chicago Public Library. In his spare time, he obsesses on Siberia and imagines that his band, the Race, can transport the listener through sound to these foreboding remote, cold surroundings. For the latest album, he disbanded the group and holed up with producer Josh Eustis and the duo worked up this claustrophobic — yes, icy — collection of Joy Division-inspired rockers, adding past and present band members on an ‘on call’ basis. One need not be a student of Russian history or even have any special interest in exploring Siberia to get swept up in Ice Station’s metallic clang. In fact, it’s a challenge to figure out exactly what Klein is singing at any point, since the guitars, keyboards and beats are pushed to overdrive. The title track and “Crack Goes the Lake” sound like lost Joy Division singles, the stifling beats and diamond-hard guitar tones channeling the beginnings of the goth era, while “Walls” and “Evil Love” lose themselves in the thick, oppressive atmosphere. Chilling.
