This Many Boyfriends

England's This Many Boyfriends have a lot going for them. Richard Brooke's voice rings with an irresistibly Morrissey-ish, melancholic swoon. The band's name is cute and catchy, and (best of all) they write punchy, airtight songs that blend rock guitars with pop melodies and sweet, straightforward sing-along lyrics. They nod lyrically to bands like Talking Heads, The Pastels, and Orange Juice; you can hear the influence of the last two bands (alongside The Smiths, The Wedding Present, and The Housemartins) all over this frothy debut. "We will live together for a long time!" Brooke sings with conviction on "Starling," just before the crew jumps in with a la-la-la chorus that could hardly be more well-placed. The guitars gallop unbridled, with occasional solos for kicks. It all exudes a gleeful energy, propelled by steady, sharp drumming and occasionally punctuated with strands of tambourine shimmer and ethereal, reedy guitar notes. TMB carefully filters and weaves the great music that informs their own; it's a blessed thing. Every track's a charmer.
