Black Pyramid

Sounding more inspired by Sleep’s Holy Mountain than by anything from Boris or Sun 0))), ". . . And the Gods Made War” opens Black Pyramid’s self-titled album with a Sabbath-esque mantra of mammoth-size riffage. Following a sludgy, Tony Iommi–like guitar part that forms the foundation of “Mirror Messiah,” the more original “No Life King” fans the flames under a bubbling cauldron blending equal parts doom, drone, and post-metal to make for something less easily described. Similarly, “Celephais” deviates from the formula to unleash a beautiful instrumental; an old acoustic guitar's detuned strings buzz under melodic arpeggios from the clean tones of an electric guitar. “The Worm Ouroboros” makes good use of a wah-wah pedal’s gate to expand and contract the guitar notes.
