Jakob Dylan takes the idea of "going solo" as literally as possible on his folk-informed debut album away from The Wallflowers, with the majority of the LP featuring just him, a guitar, and Rick Rubin's stripped-down, lived-in production. His songwriting is both measured and observant, while his voice sounds world-weary yet warm, bringing a gravitas to the war-exhausted lament "Evil Is Alive and Well" and punctuating the playful "Something Good This Way Comes" with a sly, welcoming grin.
