By Request (an apt title since McCoury doesn’t use set lists for his live shows) is an abridged version of the 2009 box, Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury. It was assembled by his accompanying kin to best represent the songs that have become fan favorites during his live concerts. McCoury’s own “I Feel the Blues Movin’ In” opens with mid-tempo picking and the magically close harmonies that can come when singing with blood relatives. His choice of cover material is refreshingly open-minded and McCoury and band take on record collection gems like the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Nashville Cats” or contemporary folkie David Olney’s “Queen Anne’s Lace.” One of the most brilliant moments here is when they turn Brit folk luminary Richard Thompson’s dramatic “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” into a festive Appalachian mountain porch jam, but they also take on traditionals with hillbilly reverence and deity dexterity. Bill Monroe’s “Bluest Man In Town” is true to form and Wilbur Jones’ “White House Blues” is a lightning-paced barnburner.
