The Knock-Down Drag-Outs

The Knock-Down Drag-Outs

A collection of EP tracks, singles, remixes, and new material, The Knock-Down Drag-Outs testifies to House of Heroes’ broad creative reach. The Columbus, Ohio–based quartet has won a faithful following thanks to its cheeky humor, propulsive pop/rock sound, and solid Christian underpinning. Many of HoH’s best moments have never made it onto its albums, as the sometimes zany, sometimes revelatory tunes gathered here make clear. Oddball outings like the shout-along rocker “Dead” and the morbidly romantic “Lovesick Zombie” are juxtaposed with the yearning Godspell cover “Day by Day” and the acoustic lament “Ghost.” The band’s spirited takes on The Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” are a special treat. The new songs here are of high quality, with “Choose Your Blade” standing out for its Spanish flamenco guitars and Queen-like melodrama and “Hide” notable for its melodic flow and high, wistful chorus. The tracks showcase lead singer Tim Skipper’s versatile pipes; he can belt out punk-pop numbers like “Galveston” and tender expressions like “Serial Sleepers” with equal conviction.
