This Summer - EP

The Brooklyn-based quartet Caged Animals may be one of the only indie rock bands out there that knows how to drive the Joy Division–inspired post-punk sound into sunnier territories. Their 2012 EP This Summer opens with “This Summer I’ll Make It Up to You,” as singer Vincent Cacchione wistfully muses on a proper summer vacation, from the Jersey shores to the West Coast’s warm waves. A Moog chirps alongside a steadily pedaling rhythm section, punctuated by Peter Hook–inspired bass notes played high on the neck. Following a cacophonous intro, “Burnt Butterfly” sparkles with Magali Francoise’s shimmering keyboard parts accompanying summery slide guitar. “She Oughta Be in Malibu” even imports samples of crashing waves as '60s-inspired organ parts pulse like a vintage Los Angeles garage band, while Cacchione begs his girl to leave Hollywood for Longboard City. “I Will Take My Own Hand” breaks for pensive, Williamsburg-flavored melancholia.
