Almost Complete

Almost Complete

Emerging from the rural wonderlands of early-'80s western Massachusetts, Deep Wound was an old-school proto-hardcore band whose members would later change the face and sound of what would become known as indie rock. J Mascis and Lou Barlow went on to form extra-loud sludge-wah icons Dinosaur (later Dinosaur Jr.), with Lou eventually leaving to start Sebadoh. Lead singer Charlie Nakajima became the frontman for local heroes Gobblehoof, and bass player Scott Helland went on to start Outpatients. Almost Complete is a British compilation, featuring Deep Wound's original 1982 demo tape, its self-titled 1983 seven-inch, and tracks from the ultra-rare Bands That Could Be God album. Most of the 27 tracks here are insanely fast and extremely short, built mostly on J's machine-gun drumming, Lou's hyper-distorted guitar slashing, and Charlie's primal scream lyrics. On par with the group's influences (like Discharge and Anti-Pasti), this is a great time capsule of early punk before the Krishnas and vegans took over. "Video Prick," "Dead Babies," "You're False," and "Psyched to Die" are especially intense.
