Halo

Halo

Mikey Maramag—a.k.a. Blackbird Blackbird—only started releasing music in 2010 and rapidly rose to the forefront of the chillwave movement. He's since proven to be quite the prolific artist. Blackbird Blackbird releases singles as often as Justin Bieber combs his hair, and we're grateful Maramag had the idea to collect a bunch of lesser known b-sides and unreleased material into one big basket of goodies. How the song "Halo" came to be in this company is hard to figure, as it's one of his strongest tunes; it ropes his amorphous, hazy sound-cloud style into a shimmering four-minute pop song with vocals you can really hear and a great little melody. Among the gems on Halo (the pained "Left to Hurt," the gently propulsive "Letting Go," the ephemeral "Understanding," to name a few), Maramag also tucks some collaborations with L.A.'s Steffaloo, whose own work is as beautiful and intimate as Blackbird Blackbird's. Her vocals are a pairing par excellence with his musical palette. What a treat.
